OUR STORY

A STAGE WITHOUT CURTAINS

COMMUNITY THEATRE IN AN INTIMATE SETTING

Stained Glass Playhouse is a nonprofit community theatre specializing in affordable, professional-quality productions presented in a small, intimate setting.

The Playhouse performs in the former sanctuary of Marvin United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. This distinctive setting places performers and audiences close together, creating an immediate live-theatre experience all its own.

MORE THAN A TAGLINE

WHAT DOES “A STAGE WITHOUT CURTAINS” MEAN?

“WE LAUGH, WE CRY, WE LIVE, AND WE LEARN ABOUT LOVE, JOY AND PEACE, WITH NO CURTAINS TO HIDE BEHIND.”

Longstanding in the Playhouse’s identity, the phrase speaks to the physical character of the theatre and to the openness of a shared live experience. On this stage, the story is close. The people are close. Nothing stands between the moment and the audience experiencing it together.

1981
THE BEGINNING
ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

FROM AN OLD SANCTUARY TO A COMMUNITY STAGE

The former sanctuary of Marvin United Methodist Church had been vacated as the church’s primary worship space in 1960. In the early 1980s, a core group began renovating it as seasonal Easter and Christmas productions grew into something more.

The space developed into a dedicated performance environment. Stained Glass Playhouse traces its beginning to 1981 and became an incorporated nonprofit organization in 1997.

This is only the opening scene of a much longer story.

BUILT BY COMMUNITY

EVERY PRODUCTION TAKES A TEAM

Onstage and off, community theatre is made by people who choose to create something together. Performers, directors, designers, technicians, builders, costumers, backstage and front-of-house volunteers, supporters, sponsors and audiences each help bring a production to life.

Whether you have years of experience or are simply curious about where you might fit, Stained Glass Playhouse welcomes the energy, ideas and presence that people bring to the room.

THEATRE WITH SOMETHING TO SAY

STORIES THAT ENTERTAIN, CHALLENGE AND CONNECT

ENTERTAIN

The joy of a live performance begins with a story worth sharing and an audience ready to experience it together.

REFLECT

SGP productions and events have encompassed moral messages, family values and community issues without insisting that every story speak from one viewpoint.

CONNECT

At its best, theatre gives us another way to consider people, relationships, choices and the communities we share.
